Scalpay School Isle of Harris

Eala provided architectural feasibility and building surveying services to support Harris Development Limited in their purchase of Scalpay School on the isle of Scalpay, and their Stage 2 application to the Scottish Land Fund. We also developed and submitted a Pre-Planning Application on their behalf.

Harris Development Limited (HDL) is a not-for-profit community development company. HDL’s proposal was to purchase, hold, and regenerate the school site for long term ownership, to be able to provide secure rented housing for local residents.

As part of this exercise we carried out a desktop survey exercise which gave us the background of the site, including services availability. We visited the building and met local groups of people who know the history of the building, including people who went to school there before it closed down. This revealed what was important to the local community about the building. We also attended a consultation event where the surrounding community was invited to attend to check the draft proposals and feed in their needs and requests for the development. This was largely aligned with out proposals, but did support the funding applications and planning application.
